Gender and the Built Environment - A Resource for Teaching and Learning

Grassroots Organizing

Commentary
We met and listened and talked and shared. We built an understanding of the various issues in each other's lives, of forced evictions, of turning the sod on a new housing project before a midnight deadline, of shoddy buildings and rents too high and wages too low to afford them. Of homelessness and vulnerability to it, of transitional housing and public housing and self build housing; we talked of our own history and that of the women who had gone before us, who struggled over the same issues.

And we had fun, we played music, and danced, and made banners, and swapped books, and built a house... and wrote a declaration.

We built a community among women and made plans for a future, and that did not include ironing.
