Food

Commentary
Good food sustains life. While the impact of bad food can often be seen in immediate sickness, more often it's a subtle problem that plagues generations and is intertwined with issues of access to land. Indigenous peoples are often moved from their land by colonial forces, alienating them from traditional culture and food sources that ensure individual and community health. Indigenous Americans for instance know the link between 'post contact' food's, like fry bread, and diabetes. The land of many indigenous cultural groups has been cleared for cattle raising to satisfy the demand for meat in large urban centres where feedlots and abattoirs are not welcome. Vegetarian food was plentiful in Women's town. Lunch often consisted of a 'meat substitute' such as mock duck accompanied by a portion of rice and fresh steamed Chinese vegetables, predictably these were not available from the McDonalds stand.
