But how are we to live, crammed into too small rooms, the space between insufficient to prevent us hearing our neighbors’ conversations; and how are we to work this way? Privacy is not a luxury. Its lack in these workshop spaces is a testament to the status accorded the meetings held within. Its lack an indicator of the difficulties women came together to discuss; the built environment does not meet our needs and we have been hampered in making built environments that do.
In spite of these difficulties the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action came into being, and despite the obvious deficiencies in our built environments little is said of them.
