Appropriate Technology

Commentary
Among the workshop venues were these sodden tents, here draping piles of chairs. The white box in the foreground covers a compressor meant to keep the tents inflated, when the flow of electricity ceased the tents collapsed. Even when the tents were inflated the venues were not used, participants could not here themselves speak over the noise of the compressor. The technology was appropriate for the purpose or the context in which it was set. For the women such as myself who were scheduled to present in one of these tents and for those who came to participate in workshops the technology was dis-empowering. There was no way to salvage these spaces, we did not have the breath to inflate the tents ourselves. Low tech venues may have permitted us to come up with a makeshift solution.
