Displacement

Commentary
Ronald was displaced from his bench for a short time. But what of the previous residents of this place? Look carefully at this photograph and you’ll see the remains of someone’s home in the background, what was once a well kept garden, building and garden walls of red brick skilfully laid in Flemmish bond, recently whitewashed to appeal to the tastes of the new ‘residents.’ But where are the old residents?

Reading the sign propped against the recumbent clown I was reminded of discussions in the days previous, slum clearance, eviction, insecure tenure… the messages seemed to parallel the protesters demand that McDonalds “…stop slashing and burning.” People displaced from their homes and neighbourhoods, loose family and community connections, loose livelihoods, and why?
