Grassroots Economy

Commentary
Essential though it is, housing alone is not enough to sustain a livelihood. While women perform most of the unpaid domestic and childrearing work they often also carry out income generating activities at home. Making and selling handicrafts, keeping the books for a local business, growing a few extra vegetables, keeping chickens, all require space. Micro economic programs meet one requirement for women to generate income, appropriate home and neighbourhood design, secure tenure and other criteria are required.
